Next Gig: May 21 at The Urban Winery

I hope you can make it to my next gig on Thursday, March 19, at The Urban Winery, 2315 Stewart Avenue, in Silver Spring, Md., from 7 to 9 p.m. Joining me will be Jack Gruber on keyboard, Paul Langosch on bass, Francis Thompson on drums and Seth Kibel on woodwinds.

Jack (pictured with me above) is a product of D.C.’s vibrant jazz scene, and he blends jazz with pop, video game and anime music influences. He is working on his debut album while pursuing a master’s at the Manhattan School of Music, and he was selected to be an artist-in-residence at Strathmore arts center in Montgomery County, Md., in 2024 and 2025. Recently, he was a featured performer at the Millenium Stage series at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Click here to watch his performance. 

Paul has played with many jazz greats throughout his career, including Tony Bennett for over 20 years, Phil Woods, George Shearing, Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow, Mose Allison, and many more. Listen to his bass on this live recording with vocalist Jon Hendricks. 

Francis’ range in music styles and performance experience have allowed him to record and perform artist including; jazz saxophonist- Davey Yarburough, jazz vocalist- Esther Williams, contemporary jazz pianist- Dan Reynolds, jazz/blues vocalist- Pam Parker, Latin jazz group Caribe Son and South African group Mahala. He is presently the director of percussion at the famed Duke Ellington School of the Arts and the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, D.C. 

Seth is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier woodwind specialists, working with some of the best bands in jazz, swing, and more. Winner of 28 Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies),the leader, clarinetist, and composer for The Kleztet, a genre-bending klezmer band he founded in the Baltimore/Washington area. He has also fronted a variety of swing and jazz groups, including Bay Jazz Project. He can also currently be seen with the Washington/ Baltimore area’s most exciting swing and jump blues band, The Natty Beaux, and Russian/Yiddish/Klezmer ensemble Music Pilgrim Trio. Seth has appeared with such notables as boogie-woogie pianist Daryl Davis, Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), Percy Sledge, The Coasters, and Johnnie Johnson. He has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Carter Barron Amphitheatre, the Lowell Folk Festival in Lowell, Massachusetts, as well as on several European tours.

The Urban Winery serves more than 30 wines produced on-site as well as a selection of other hand-crafted wines, beers, and spirits produced in the state of Maryland and around the world. They also have a tasty food menu to go along with your beverages.
